How is aventurine formed?
Aventurine, from mineral group called silicates, is a variety of quartz. It is a rare rock. It’s not an actual mineral, as it is made when other natural minerals form in the quartzite during high grade metamorphism, which depends on the impurities present in the original quartz-rich sedimentary deposit.
Aventurine’s green tint is a result of shimmering inclusions of Mica. As you move it, the sparkling inclusions produce a glittering effect known as aventurescence. It never appears in crystalline form, but its most common color is green, even though it might also be orange, brown, yellow, blue or gray.
Is aventurine quartz?
The rock is composed of interlocking quartz grains known as quartzite. Most of aventurine quartz is filled with small platelets of green chromium mica (fuchsite). Color varieties of aventurine are the result of chemical processes during rock formation, therefore goldstone, for instance, is filled with tiny metallic copper crystals. Other variety called oligoclase feldspar, is on the other hand filled with tiny crystals of exsolved hematite, which results in reddish inclusions. The rock of that tint is known as a sunstone. In Italian, the words “a ventura” mean by chance.
